Streszczenia

The processes of de-democratization taking place in Poland since 2015 and associated with the takeover of political reins by the Law and Justice party (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość, PiS) provoked discussion on the role of civil society and the importance of the determinants of social mobilization in democratic transformations. The departure from freedom-based, liberal mechanisms in Poland, which emerged after nearly thirty years of creating democracy, arouses concern about the future of democratization. It also inspires scientific inquiry as to the causes and conditions of this phenomenon. The proposed paper will examine the context of social mobilization as a phenomenon contributing to the processes of de-democratization. Social mobilization can refer to a broad range of interactions aimed at intensifying participation in public life to achieve particular changes. These interactions take the shape of social movements, but also of formal and established collective behaviors undertaken by various social life participants. This is a sign of increased public activity, or at least a part of it, aimed at manifesting dissatisfaction with the situation in the country, indicating readiness to change the social order. According to Gordon Marshall social mobilization is a process of transforming a collection of passive individuals into active participants in public life (Marshall 2008, 325). Moreover, it can manifest itself through a society’s willingness to change the established social order (Gryko 2016, 172). The forms and outcomes of social mobilization vary across diverse political contexts that feature different constitutional and legal frameworks, but also distinct citizen mobilization narratives. Each of these contextual factors leaves traces of citizen democratic mobilization and organization, and each shapes the choice of forms of mobilization (Schattan and Coelho 2010)....
