Efforts to establish a Polish university in Poznań, undertaken since the 16th century, were not successful until after Poland regained its independence in November 1918. Six months later, the grand opening of Wszechnica Piastowska (in English: Piast Academy), as the University of Poznań was originally called, took place. This also marked the formal beginning of academic psychology in Poznań, to which Stefan Błachowski (1889-1962), a former student of Kazimierz Twardowski (1866- 1938) at Lvov University, made a significant contribution. This article reconstructs the events of that time based on two historical sources: Twardowski's personal diary and his correspondence with Błachowski. The psychological perspective adopted in this article on the beginnings of university psychology in Poznań offers new insights into the organizational efforts of its founder, who faced an internal conflict lasting nearly four years. On one hand, there was „the necessity of venturing out into the world to earn a living”; on the other, a „strong emotional pull toward Lvov”. In resolving this conflict, he could not count on the support of his mentor, Twardowski.
